Post subject: Don't shoot the helicopter

For new people, if you shoot at and hit the helicopter at the end of the game that is suppose to take you away, the game will not end in most games. I have run across too many of these. To be safe, if a chopper is not shooting at you then don't shoot at it.

Hi Buck,
Good advice, we have seen this many times with the exfil helos. The helo moves out of the area trigger and the exfil event does not happen and the map does not end.

It really comes back to the mapper. The mapper has not written the events correctly to stop this from happening.

Come play some Mod games with us.

Change the helicopter's AI textfile to H_BHAWMP, or whatever it's called in the unlocked Med.

Several AI textfiles have entries for changing to combat speed (and in some cases, combat altitude). If a helicopter with combat speed (and/or altitude) detects hostiles or is shot at, it jumps to combat speed (literally jumping, too), even if you change the combat speed to anything other than default.

These are holdovers from Comanche 4 and are important behaviors in that game. There may even be gameplay advantages to having your transport go low and fast under fire in DFBHDTS.

H_BHAWMP and a few other AI textfiles have no entry for combat speed. They do not react at all to enemy presence or incoming fire. They fly rock steady and most reliably for events involving positioning and area triggers.

So if you want to be as certain as possible that your BH will hit its waypoints and stay in its area triggers, use the AI textfile with the MP in its name.

(There is a strong argument to be made about adjusting WP radius, distance, and heli approach speeds to ensure hitting WPs, true, but it's never wrong to pick the best pilot for the job first.)
